Music Monday – Hid in the Little Things

musicmonday

So if you’ve been following Music Monday with me for some time, you’ve probably picked up on the fact that I get a little obsessed with certain songs when I’m writing different books. When I was writing Lethal Sin I heard ‘Hid in the Little Things’ by Zander Hawley for the first time, and I fell in love with it. It is perfect for this entire series, and I’m sharing it now because I don’t want to forget it, and I’m pretty sure it will be the theme song for one of the main characters in the 2nd book. I’m currently writing the prequel (which follows Camille as she learns to be an assassin), but I’ve already got ideas for official book 2, which follows two new hot guys, also hitmen, who happen to know Mateo (and thus Camille). Anyway, keep this series in mind as you read the lyrics below, and listen to the song. It’s… perfection.

My favorite lyrics…

Lord have mercy for I’m unkind
My hands are dirty and I’ve little time
Just know that I’m not sorry for half of my crimes
Cause’ hid in the little things
Are all my darkest dreams
I’d like to let you see

I’m not a hunter
This isn’t hell you’re in
This is urgent love
There’s much more danger
Do I love her still, does it matter?
On the window sill, with no ladder

All my women, all their words
I’m obsessed with fire, the way it burns

‘Hid in the Little Things’ by Zander Hawley

Music Monday – Fragile

musicmonday

It’s Music Monday and back to normal in my corner of the world. Today I’ve got ‘Fragile’ by a new kiwi artist, Maya Payne. It’s got great rhythm and her voice is so unique! Some of the insanity of my last few weeks is winding down, the day job seems to be on an upswing, and I finally had a few minutes this weekend to sit down and put down some more words on ‘Early Sins’ the prequel for Lethal Sin (Dangerous Games #1). Overall, it’s going pretty well, but whenever I’m writing I always gravitate to the darker music, and this one caught my ear a couple of weeks ago and I instantly threw it on my Music Monday playlist. Just scroll down and hit play to listen!

Favorite lyrics…

A shiver down my spine
These bones so fragile and fine
We’re all just troubled minds
In troubled times

There’s something in the dark
A dying spark
Like a flame in the rain
Consumed in the pain

It’s in my bones
It’s in my skin
Troubled minds
Fragile spines

Music Monday – Light

musicmonday

With all the darkness lately, specifically the police deaths here in Dallas (at a peaceful protest), so close on the heels of the deaths of the LGBTQ community members (and their allies) in Orlando, I felt like I needed a little light in my life. ‘Light’ by Sleeping at Last filled that space for me with upbeat instrumentals, and soft, heartbreaking lyrics. It’s sung like it’s meant for a newborn child, but they are words I feel we all need to hear, no matter our age. I watched the news until almost 2am the night of the attacks on our local police here in Dallas, and just a week earlier had my heart broken by the attacks on Pulse nightclub in Orlando (because my friends and I go dancing at Dallas gay clubs often, and as a bisexual with many LGBTQ friends this touches too close). Now, in some weird twist of fate, work is sending me to Orlando this week and I cannot shake the need to share love in the world this week. I am stretched too thin, stressed too much, and I know many friends who feel the same. This song is something we all need, and I beg you all to listen to it. Scroll down, hit play, close your eyes and let the lyrics wash over you with the upbeat, powerful music behind them. Just, do better. However, you can. We all deserve better than the world is right now. *love*

Favorite lyrics…

May these words be the first
To find your ears.
The world is brighter than the sun
Now that you’re here.
Though your eyes will need some time to adjust
To the overwhelming light surrounding us,

I’ll give you everything I have.
I’ll teach you everything I know.
I promise I’ll do better.
I will always hold you close,
But I will learn to let you go.
I promise I’ll do better.
I will soften every edge,
I’ll hold the world to its best,
And I’ll do better.
With every heartbeat I have left
I will defend your every breath,
And I’ll do better.

’Сause you are loved.
You are loved more than you know.
I hereby pledge all of my days
To prove it so.
Though your heart is far too young to realize
The unimaginable light you hold inside,

I’ll give you everything I have.
I’ll teach you everything I know.
I promise I’ll do better.

Music Monday – Tiptoe

musicmonday

It’s Music Monday again and I have ‘Tiptoe’ by Gracie and Rachel! I, of course, stumbled on this song one week when I was listening to music on Spotify and the clarity of her voice just stunned me and caught my attention. The whole song is this beautiful, vocal and lyric driven work with the softest background music driving the rhythm. And the video they put out for it (below)? It’s art. It’s so beautiful and fits the song so well. This is definitely a story I’d like to know, check out the lyrics below (but scroll down first and click the video!).

A few of my favorite lyrics…

Blonde hair, blue eyes
Violin and black and white
Short skirts, tight pants, clean shoes
Won’t deliver the news

What’s she gonna play, what’s she gonna play
What’s she gonna play, what’s she gonna play,
what’s she gonna play
Got nothing to say, got nothing to say
Gonna wash away, got nothing to say,
gonna wash away

Running naked through your streets
Sharing clothes and whacking weeds
Bring in a crowd, fill up the house and play
Hold on to their eyes, make them all wise,
show them the way

‘Tiptoe’ by Gracie and Rachel

Music Monday – Walk on By

musicmonday

It’s fourth of July here in the states and we’re celebrating our independence, and I feel like this song (‘Walk on By’ from Noosa) has a bit of that in it. It’s hard to tell from the lyrics, but I always get the sense that it’s a woman reflecting on love that just wasn’t right at the moment, someone she had to let go, or who let go of her, and she’s accepting it. Accepting that being separate was necessary, but she hopes he still loves her, because she still loves him. There’s an entire love story in these lyrics, and it’s tempting to write a book for it! Scroll down and hit play and listen for yourself! The video is gorgeous.

A few of my favorite lyrics…

Run when the rhythms right
Go into the night
Go until you’re out of sight
And you’re out of my mind
Lost in the midnight blue shadows of the moon
Here with open arms for you, feeling something so new
Said with me you’d reach the sun
Oh but we were so young
Love me ’till the summer’s done But keep me in your heart so i hold on

So walk on by, I’ve got no reason to love you but I do, I do, I do

‘Walk on By’ by Noosa

Music Monday – Get Free

musicmonday

It’s Music Monday again and I’m back at the day job after my awesome scuba diving adventure this past weekend. I almost laughed when I saw that ‘Get Free’ by Whissell was my next song on the Music Monday unofficial playlist (for songs I want to use), because my day job is both desperately trying to convince me to stay here, and also doing everything imaginable to drive me away. Basically, it’s a nightmare, but luckily I can put on my headphones and block them out until the next meeting.

Enjoy, lovelies!

Favorite lyrics:

You hold me like you want me to stay
You only wanna keep me from running away
You hold me like you want me to stay
You only wanna keep me on your ball and chain
You don’t get to have it your way

You got a hold on me and I gotta get free

I’m a cigarette, you’re nicotine
Good to know honey finally, you’re gonna crave me
Shaking like you need me to stay
You’re never gonna keep me from running away

‘Get Free’ by Whissell
